Lombardi: Winning Is the Only Thing
Published in Hardcover by Ty Crowell Co (August, 1976)
Author: Jerry, Kramer
Average review score:

Lombardi, as viewed by the men who knew him best
This book is a compilation of about two dozen interviews conducted by the author in the months immediately prior to and following Vince Lombardi's death from cancer in 1970. The men interviewed (his former teammates, coaching peers and men who played under him) provide a unique perspective on Lombardi and help the reader understand why this man is still so revered more than thirty years after his death.

The author, Jerry Kramer, adds his own comments to each interview, and Kramer's ego occasionally shines through (a couple times he disagrees with comments made by the interviewees), but overall this does not distract very much from the impact of the book.

If you want to learn more about Vince Lombardi, of course David Maraniss' "When Pride Still Mattered" is an absolute gem of a biography, but I would recommend this book also.

Mel Bay Presents Cowboy Songs for Acoustic Guitar
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (September, 1999)
Author: Steve Eckels
Average review score:

Songs? I thought those were things you sing!
This is a lovely book with companion CD for the intermediate to advanced *Instrumental Guitarist*. Not a Cub Scout singalong here.

Still, you get a nice folio with nicely-arranged fingerstyle versions of famous and not-so-famous cowboy pieces, plus a very nice CD.

Still looking for that guitar/singing book with CD, but this is a good "something else," so I give it 4 stars.

Mel Bay Presents Spanish Songs for Guitar
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (December, 1996)
Author: Jerry Silverman
Average review score:

Easy to Intermediate Compositions
This is a fun book of what I take are traditional songs from Spain and Latin American countries. Each song is represented twice - once with the lyric part written in words and standard notation on a treble clef above a separate, second accompaniment guitar treble clef line. The song is then presented a second time a few pages later as the guitar solo version only. The solo version has the guitar part written in both standard notation and tablature. All the songs are fun to play and within reach of a beginning to intermediate guitar player. A beginner will appreciate the fact that the majority of music is played within the first 4 frets. A few songs use drop D tuning but most use standard tuning.

Since I'm not a native Spanish speaker I really have no way of knowing if these are traditionals or not - one song has a composer credit, the rest don't. The lyrics are provided in both english and spanish. Sometimes Mr. Silverman provides translator's notes about what some words really mean since a literal translation is not always the most accurate. I deducted 1 point from the score because the book does not offer a cd.

Song list -
Lagrimas/Tears
La Cana/Sugar Cane
Alala (no English translation was provided for this title)
Moza Navarra/Navarra Beauty
Pastora/Shepherdess
Venias de la Mejana/You Came From La Mejana
Morena salada/Dark Haired Enchantress
Eres Aguila Real/You Are a Royal Eagle
Yo Quisiera Ser Guitarra/I Would Like to Be a Guitar
Viva La Quince Brigada/Long Live the Fifteenth Brigade
Si Me Quieres Escribir/If You Want To Write to Me
Venga Jaleo/Join In the Struggle
Los Cuatro Generales/The Four Insurgent Generals
Ay! Linda Amiga/Ah! Dearest Sweetheart
Malaguenas al emigrante/Malaguenas for the Immigrant
Serranilla/Mountain Song
Estoy Sonando con Ella/I'm Dreaming of Her
Las Palabras, Amor Mio/All Those Words, My Dear Beloved
Canto de Romeria/Pilgrimage Song
Me Ilamaste "Morenita"/You Called Me "Little Dark-Skin"
La Huevera/The Egg Lady
Los Biblicos/The Nightingales

Mel Bay Presents Systematic Studies for Flamenco Guiitar: Estudios Sistematicos Para LA Guitarra Flamence
Published in Unknown Binding by Mel Bay Publications (December, 1998)
Average review score:

For serious study and not for entertainment
This 2 CD set by Serrano is designed to go with the Mel Bay book by the same title. Literally dozens of movements to emulate, I think that this set is for the intermediate player of Flamenco. Like all other Serrano's work, it is challenging and I feel that it is beneficial and a very good compilation.

Mel Bay's Basic Harp for Beginners
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (April, 1994)
Author: Laurie Riley
Average review score:

Learn the harp from a great teacher!
Laurie Riley is an accomplished folk harper. Her book is arranged logically, and you learn to play the tunes sequentially, starting with simple pieces and moving along to more difficult ones.

The pieces themselves are nicely arranged, and you'll (very) soon be playing with both hands - important to me, because when I learned piano many years ago, I never progressed beyond the left hand exercises! So my belief was, it's difficult to play any instrument that requires both hands. Not true.

The one and only thing I didn't like about the book was the pictures that depicted how to hold your hands. They look as if the harper's hands and arms are being held abnormally and are full of tension. Keeping your muscles relaxed is of utmost importance, or you'll never progress to difficult pieces where your fingers need to move quickly and surely. I wish Ms Riley would update these pictures next time the book is updated to show a more relaxed stance.

I'm well into my adulthood (late 40's) and have made excellent progress using this book (and the Sylvia Woods "Learn to Play the Harp" book, used in tandem). I highly recommend it!

Mel Bay's Complete Harmonica Book
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (July, 1994)
Authors: Phil Duncan and Phil Dunccan
Average review score:

Very good Book
As you might expect from any Mel Bay published instruction book, this one provides very good basic music and harmonica instruction. It is an excellent choice for any beginner. The only problem (and this is a minor issue)...some beginner's might benefit from a CD or cassette.

Mel Bay's Easiest Harmonica Book

Author: William Bay
Average review score:

An excellent intro
This is a fine introductory harmonica book for beginners of all ages. Nothing fancy, but everything you need to know to get started. The notation is clear and simple, and the format is easy to understand. Diatonic players will get their money's worth on this one: A bargain at twice the price!

Mel Bay's Favorite Hymns for Classical Guitar
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (June, 1993)
Author: Joseph Castle
Average review score:

A Good Resource for Sacred Guitar Music
As stated in the preface, "all transcriptions were derived from the best-known versions of the hymns." This collection of hymns and songs of praise are carefully noted with fingerings and are easy enough for late beginning - to early intermediate guitarists, since since much of the musical notation is in the first position. Both traditional and contemporary pieces are included in this good selection of familiar sacred music.

Mel Bay's Master Anthology of Jazz Guitar Solos

2000 Jazz Guitar
This book and 3 CD combination offers a wide and varied style of players and music. Picking from such a wide range of guitarist offers the musician a good selection of music. Not all of the featured players are widely known, but each offer an accomplished showcase for the jazz guitar. Some of the better known players include Abercombie, Jimmy Bruno, Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Van Eps, Andy Summers, William Bay (of Mel Bay fame), and Sid Jacobs. The music is in both standard notation and tab. The CDs feature each player, some solo, some with backing players, performing the tunes.

Mel Bay's O'Carolan Harp Tunes for Mountain Dulcimer
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (November, 1998)
Author: Shelley Stevens
Average review score:

If you like O'Carolan, or know someone who does. . .
don't pass up this book. I have yet to find a better collection of O'Carolan tunes for the fretted dulcimer in one volume. Interesting atrrangements abound, and include some four-string chromatic tuning pieces and pieces with great use of harmonics. Dazzle your favorite Celtophile with this book.
